Why it rocked: We love strategy games here. And we love the fact that the just keep getting better and better as time passes, especially since the crappy throngs of crap have stopped crappily crapping up the store shelves. Consequently, this year brought us a pretty tough decision in this category with more than a couple of games in serious contention in both real-time and turn-based markets. But when all was thought through, Generals was decided upon simply because it was done with style and power in a modern setting filled with keen new weapons and gadgets without going foolishly over the top. The units and factions were well thought out, the conflict was timely, and the look was brilliant in almost every way. Heck, the fact that the developers went and re-invented a beloved series without totally screwing it up and angering a rabid fan base probably says enough.

Why it rocked: This was the year of the expansion. There were a lot of add-ons released for a lot of games, and many of them were almost new games unto themselves, which is really what we gamers look for. But even with all of these great titles to choose from, we had to pick between them for our award. And this year the best was Zero Hour. Not only did it add new units and gameplay mechanics that actually changed strategy and the way the game played enough for new strategies to emerge, but it also gave us a brand new campaign for each of the three sides and finally added unique generals to fight against in head-on battles of skill and strategic supremacy that provided a pretty damn good challenge. Even better, once you defeated each of your opponents as one of the generals, you get to use that general his specialized army for battle in multiplayer and skirmish. Kudos to EA for expanding an already great game in so many ways.

Als jeweils zweitplatzierte Games landen
Empires: Dawn of the Modern World als zweitbestes RTS und Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne als zweitbestes Add-On auf den Plätzen....
